《糊塗世界》最初以連載小說形式刊于光緒三十二年（1906）上海的《世界繁華報》，當時曾連載十九回，署名爲繭叟。該書僅收了十二回，由茂苑惜秋生作序，後卻不見有下卷問世。由于發行有限，年代頗久，現已不易訪求。這部譴責小說反映的，主要是晚清時期湖南、兩廣和福建等地區官場的黑暗現實。同時加上壹些議論對當時官場現狀的高度概括，具有警時省世的作用。
