"百善孝为先"，西周国学的内容为"一日孝行，以亲父母；二日友行，以尊贤良；三日顺行，以事师长"。《论语》中也记载着孔子教育学生要把孝放在首位的事。《开宗明义》云："君子之视亲孝，故忠可移于君。"孝亲，不但可以忠君，而且可以延伸到一切道德领域。孝，成了修身、事君、交友、为官、临战中一切道德的根本，是"至德要道"。几千年来，孝敬父母这一美德，熏陶着中华民族的子子孙孙，陶冶了千万个杰出人物。本书节选了部分典型的孝敬父母的故事，目的是教育广大青少年读者认识到孝敬父母的必要性，强调从根本上、从思想情感上去施行孝道，继而提升中华传统美德。
