本書全稱《新镌批評繡像合浦珠傳》，不署撰人，題『槜李煙水散人編次。』首有自序。全書分四卷，共十六回。據考原作者爲袁于令，袁氏所作今已佚，本書系煙水散人據袁氏所撰《合浦珠》改編而成。

以珠爲線索，寫才子佳人故事，但多節外生枝，內容龐雜。或因寫淫僧，有謗佛之嫌，又間有怪異情節，爲清廷所不容。
