吴佩孚，字子玉，1874年出生于山东蓬莱。1898年投淮军。1906年任北洋陆军曹锟部管带，颇得器重。后升任旅长。护国讨袁运动兴起，随营入川镇压蔡锷领导的云南护国军。1917年7月，任讨逆军西路先锋，参加讨伐张勋复辟。同年孙中山组护法军政府。吴佩孚是中华民国史上北洋系政治军事集团统治时期的佼佼者。他于维新运动走向高潮时以秀才的英姿投入沙场军界，并逐渐跻身将帅，位极人臣。
